Today, Stand With Bandcamp in Support of Trans Rights

trans-fundraiser-600-7

Bandcamp is a platform for artistic expression, and all manner of variance in experience and identity, including gender and sexuality, is welcome here. We support our LGBT+ users and staff, and we stand against any person or group that would see them further marginalized. This includes the current U.S. administration, and its recent capricious declaration that transgender troops will no longer be able to serve in the military. That this announcement was motivated in part to help fund the border wall exposes it as part of the administration’s cynical, discriminatory agenda.

In response, we will be donating 100% of our share of every sale today, August 4th (from midnight to midnight Pacific Time) to the Transgender Law Center, a nonprofit organization that works tirelessly to change law, policy, and culture for the more equitable. TLC does critical policy advocacy and litigation on multiple fronts, fights for healthcare for trans veterans, defends incarcerated trans people from abuse in prisons and detention centers, supports trans immigrants, and helps trans youth tell their stories and build communities.

When an Executive Order was issued earlier this year barring immigrants and refugees from seven Middle Eastern countries from entering the United States, we held a wildly successful fundraiser for the ACLU. We hope you’ll join us in now doing the same in support of trans rights. To participate as a fan, simply purchase music through Bandcamp today and we’ll donate our share of the sale to TLC. To participate as an artist or label, send some or all of your share of today’s sales directly to TLC here, and let us know your plan in the comments below so that we can help spread the word. Since our announcement, over 200 bands and labels have joined us in donating their share of proceeds to TLC. You can see that list here.

—Bandcamp Staff

(Update: Over the course of our fundraiser for the Transgender Law Center, fans bought nearly $700,000 worth of music. Our share, which is ~12% of that amount, was donated to the TLC.)

Below, you’ll find a sampling of some of the music made by trans and gender non-conforming artists on Bandcamp. We hope that as you listen to these albums, you’ll discover some great new artists from all walks of life, who share their experiences in song.

  1. Thank you so much for doing this. It’s a bold stance, and unfortunately some people will be offended. I’m proud to support this site and this cause. I’ll definitely be pitching in!

  2. So great to see this pop up in my email this AM. A good start to the day. The FieldHands say…Thanks Bandcamp!

  3. Great idea! I work in US and have many friends LGBT friends there and my Progressive/Art Rock band The Absent City will donate all the funds from August sales. theabsentcity.bandcamp.com
    Greetings from Ukraine 🙂

  4. Though I am not of transgender orientation, I believe ALL people deserve the respect and acceptance as citizens of this world. Let’s all end the hate and bigotry and make our planet a better place for everyone. Leaders who divide us have not learned the mistakes of the past.

    peace and best wishes,

    Joseph

  5. We (Crown Larks from Chicago) will be donating all of our digital sales too, thank you for doing something that Spotify/ITunes etc would never dream of doing at this level

  6. Just so everyone posting here knows, I AM discovering your music through your support of this effort. Thank you.

    1. Glad you clarified that. I will donate 100% of my albums sales to this effort! Thanks for including me. https://georgiejessup.bandcamp.com/

      Short Bio:
Georgie Jessup’s songwriting is influenced by everything from old school country to Memphis R&B, placing her music firmly in the “cosmic” Americana Music genre. Her lyrics reflect her outspoken advocacy for animal rights, Native American issues, transgender rights and environmental sanity. The subject of an award winning documentary film, “Woman in A Man’s Suit,” Georgie also has four, well received, CDs available. “Georgie sings from the heart, like a rare flower in a wilderness,” says blues diva Candye Kane. “She speaks to us about the deepest issues. Issues that all of us should care about, but so many of us pretend don’t affect us.”

  7. Hey! I’m gonna jump on the bandwagon here cause this issue is important to me too.
All the money from any sales I make this week or over the weekend (including Monday since this one is a long weekend here in Canada) on https://vertigofox.bandcamp.com will go to TLC.
I’d recommend Cognitiophobic EP especially for this since that was written in the months after the US election in November and meant as a reflection on the reasons I thought Trump wasn’t qualified.

  8. Yet another reason why I love doing business through Bandcamp. I made a duo record with Heather Christian called Long Arc (on Bandcamp at: http://store.heatherchristian.com/album/long-arc) that we dedicated to the Pulse Nightclub victims and their families and have been sending proceeds from that record to their Gofundme and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Happy to be a part of this day on Friday and to donate to the TLC.

  9. How about supporting transgender bands? I’m in a Seattle-based transgender noise collective and we need to eat and have gas to get to work to support ourselves. Transgender Law Center isn’t going to help with that, are they?

  10. Very happy to receive this news! Bravo, Bandcamp! I am also be happy to donate all sales from my bandcamp this weekend. If I have the time, I may even record and release something new this weekend too to boost sales! Thank you, BC!

  11. 100% on board with this. Cheers to everyone involved in helping to make this happen!

Will be donating all proceeds (assuming any come my way) from my crappy techno tracks throughout the entire weekend (Aug 4-6).

https://watchingnebula.bandcamp.com if you really are interested. I don’t have to be LGBT+ to be outraged at the treatment trans people face.

  12. Wow thank you so much for this article! Choosing to use your position to bring practical aid as well as awareness is just stunning.

I’m gradually adding new songs to my first full length release and anything I make on Friday will be donated to the Transgender Law Center.

As a trans/queer/lgbtqia person, each time I notice other individuals being visible, valuing themselves and each other, it feels to “come out”, as lgbtqia and/or creatively and be a dominant-culture-defying individual. The “spectacle” of lgbtqia people being valued is so rare as to be astonishingly powerful and moving. By supporting trans artists and trans rights, Bandcamp feels like a really good space to be in, and I’m even more pleased now I’ve found a whole bunch of great new musicians whose stories resonate to some degree with me. Awesome post!

Apparently my music sounds a bit like tom waits, but genre switch is my thing.. See what you think.. https://themolluscdimension.bandcamp.com

  13. I’m on board. Buy my music, play it anywhere you want. Help support this wonderful cause. quantumsound.bandcamp.com. People are people. Music is the grand unifier.

    Love.
    Quantum Smooth Jazz

  14. Hey guys, Drake from Epic Symphonic Metal band Ruins of Elysium here.
Ruins Of Elysium have been using our music for celebration and empowerment of LGBTQ community since our very first release and this time it won’t be different. We will also donate all profit made this Friday! Thank you, Bandcamp! We stand together with our T siblings.

    https://ruinsofelysium.bandcamp.com/

  15. I want all of my friends…my family….safe. All of friday’s proceeds from the Warehouse 86 Catalog of music will go toward this great cause.

  16. Happy to donate my own sales this friday to the TLC! Thanks Bandcamp for doing this!
love, Stereochemistry (we are five aliens sharing one human body: two are boys, two are girls, one is omnigender; two are heteros, two are homos, one is omnisexual, so yeah… we wired ourselves up for experiencing all sorts of human experience and connections!)

  17. I’ll be donating 100% of my sales share from Bandcamp on Friday to the TLC. I was appalled by Trump’s arbitrary decision to ban transgender people from the US military in what is clearly a discriminatory attack on their human rights. Really glad Bandcamp are doing this.

  18. This is a great initiative, and so necessary. Nice one Bandcamp Staff!

I will be donating 100% of my bandcamp sales this Friday.

    All the best!

  19. I have several items in my cart that I was planning to purchase today, but I will now wait until Friday to do so in order to support this very worthy cause. The arts bring ALL people together, not apart, and so together we must stand against those who foster bigotry and hate. Go Bandcamp!

  20. Merge Records is joining Bandcamp in supporting the Transgender Law Center this Friday by donating 50% of all net sales that day to the organization. Additionally, all orders of two vinyl LPs or more on Friday will receive a free mystery 7-inch single.
